Geothermal Energy is becoming a cornerstone in the energy supply of the 21st century. Several regions worldwide are suitable for the utilization of Deep Geothermal Energy to produce electricity and heat, that can be used as a base load source for the electrical networks or for a local district heating network. This includes countries like Iceland or Indonesia, in which the heatflow is raised by active volcanism, but also East Africa, Turkey or the Upper Rhine Graben at the border between France and Germany where the Earth’s crust is relatively thin as a result past or ongoing plate tectonics. However, there is a large potential for Deep and Ultra-deep Geothermal Projects also in many other regions of the world.
