What is important for Carbonate Settings?

Carbonates are important geothermal reservoirs i.e., in Southeast Germany (Bavaria), where waters from the Upper Jurassic are produced for district heating networks and electricity. Besides production from fractures and faults here, also primary porosity and particularly secondary porosity i.e., vugs or karst contribute to water production. We interpret Borehole Image Logs with attention to these factors to define and expand the productive intervals.

What is important for Siliciclastic Settings?

Also, in siliciclastic rocks the pores can contribute to the hot fluid production. Here, the thickness of sand bodies, the presence of clays and shale bodies contribute to the productivity. Borehole Images can be interpreted to map the sedimentological bodies and their orientation to find the most prolific bodies.

Where can the sedimentological data be used for further analysis?

Detailed knowledge about reservoirs is important to determine production intervals, zones for stimulation and for planning purposes for subsequently planned wells. Our findings are used to refine seismic interpretations and static models. Also, the interference with the structural interpretation is an important aspect of the sedimentological interpretation.
